From Rip City To Rumeal Robinson

rumeal-robinson

I wish I had some great story about attending a Blazers game at Memorial Coliseum as a kid or writer.

Guess I’ll have to leave that for Dwight Jaynes.

Come to think of it, I’ve only stepped in the Coliseum once in my life and that was as kid. It was back in 1986 and me and some childhood buddies saw the WWF when they came to Portland. All I remember is George “The Animal” Steele in one match and The Islanders in another. And if you remember The Islanders I’m very impressed.

So I guess it’s only fitting then that I’ll miss Wednesday’s return game to the “Glass Palace” against Channing Frye’s Phoenix Suns. The wife is out of town in New York City on business, so that leaves me and my two little girls huddled around the Hi-Fi listening to Bill Schonely call the action between Portland and Phoenix.

Just like the good old days.

I may not be able to watch basketball at the Coliseum, but I sure as heck can write about it – and did for a feature story running tomorrow morning over at SLAM online – thanks to Jerome Kersey and Robert Pack, two guys I always appreciated from Portland’s ’91-’92 season. Maybe it’s just because I’m a NBA history buff, but I could have listened to those two guys recount tales all day long, especially Jerome who remembered every single detail about this halfcourt heave against Golden State.

It goes without saying, but I’m looking forward to the season with Portland’s 40th Anniversary in the NBA being the constant theme throughout, and former players and coaches on hand sharing memories of their days in Rip City. Pretty sure that former Blazers point guard Rumeal Robinson won’t be making any of the ceremonies though. It sounds like he has his hands full.

Man, and I thought I had a lot going on.
